Application Guidelines for Grants

The purpose of the STA is the improvement of the quality of patient care by improving technology and its application. The goal of the Research Award is to promote quality research into technologies that address high priority needs of the practice of anesthesia.

The STA Research Grant Program supports research directed towards technologies used in anesthesia. Highest priority is given to studies that leverage the use of technology from high-volume, well-funded, non-medical industries into anesthesia to provide effective solutions. The Society encourages submissions from young investigators or those embarking on exciting new avenues of technology research.

Areas of research interest include but are not limited to:

  • Development of "smart instruments" as an aid to the cognitive process
  • Application of technology to enhance training of anesthesia personnel
  • Outcomes research on the use of technology

Applications

The application must be received no later than October 1, 2007. The budget request must not exceed $5,000. Projects may be up to 1 year in duration, although shorter anticipated time to completion is encouraged. Funds may not be used for indirect costs (overhead).

Awards for projects to begin January 1, 2008 will be announced at the meeting of the STA Board of Directors at the October ASA meeting, and will be recognized at the STA Breakfast Panel at the ASA. The applicants will receive written feedback from the reviewers within one week of the announcement of the research grant award winner.

Grant recipients are expected to present the results of their research at the STA Annual Meeting held the January of the year following the award of the grant. STA will provide complementary conference registration and a reimbursement of up to $1,000 travel expenses to the presenter.

Eligibility

Awards are made to a sponsoring not-for-profit institution, not to individuals or to departments. Any qualified member of a sponsoring not-for-profit institution may apply. Only one person may be listed as the principal investigator. All co-investigators, collaborators, and consultants must be listed.

Application Format

  1. Title of research project
  2. Name of applicant with academic degrees, office address, phone/fax and e-mail address
  3. Sponsoring institution and name, office address, and phone number of responsible financial officer
  4. Funding amount requested

Research Plan

Limited to 2 pages, typed, single-spaced, excluding references; appendices are discouraged except for the required CV of the principal investigator.

  1. Introduction
    1. Objectives of proposed research
    2. Background: Reference work of others leading to this proposal and the rationale of the proposed investigation. Describe the relationship of the priorities highlighted in these guidelines.
    3. Specific Aims: What questions will be answered by the investigation? What hypothesis will be tested
  2. Methods to be employed
    1. Describe data collection procedure, specific techniques, number of observations or experiments.
    2. Describe types of data to be obtained and their treatment including statistical analysis or power analysis if indicated.

Budget

Include all proposed expenditures of the total project. Indicate under each category the amount requested or provided from other sources. No indirect costs may be paid for by this grant.

  • Personnel (limit salaries of individuals to NIH Guidelines)
  • Consultant costs
  • Equipment
  • Supplies
  • Patient Costs
  • Other Costs
  • Total funds requested from this grant

List the facilities, equipment, supplies and services essential for this project and indicate their availability

Principal Investigator

Attach as an appendices the CV of the principal investigator. CV is limited to three pages.

Transmittal Letter

A letter of transmittal from the department chair must accompany the grant application. The letter must address:

  1. Applicants availability to expend the time allocated to this project
  2. The availability of facilities as indicated in the proposal
  3. An agreement to return any unused funds if the applicant fails to complete the project

Submission

The completed application (with the proposal and appendices in a Word document) and letter of transmittal should be sent to:
